Any household appliance that is frequently used should be regularly cleaned and maintained. Ice machines are no different. This will not only improve the quality of your ice, but will increase the lifespan of the unit, and will also ensure sanitary production. Never keep anything in the ice storage bin that isn’t ice. Objects like wine or beer bottles are not only unsanitary, but the labels can slip off and plug up the drain.

WHEN TO CLEAN YOUR SCOTSMAN ICE MACHINE

When the machine’s "TIME-TO-CLEAN" indicator light is yellow or you’re experiencing any of the following, it might also be a sign that it needs to be cleaned:

  • Visible Build Up
  • Unusual Taste
  • Low Capacity
  • No Ice
  • Ice is Incompletely Formed
  • Ice is Misshaped
  • Unusual Noise
  • Time to Clean Light is On

WHY CLEAN YOUR ICE MACHINE?

During normal operation, the mineral scale that is in your home water supply will gradually build up on the ice machine’s surfaces. This mineral build-up can hamper the efficiency of the ice-making system. Regularly removing, about every six months, the mineral scale build-up will lengthen the life of your Scotsman ice machine.

You should never allow the machine to operate without regular cleaning. Some water conditions will dictate even more frequent cleaning of the ice-making section. If your home has high carpet areas or pets, this will dictate more frequent cleaning of the condenser.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE CLEANED

Outside Cabinet & Door
Ensure to wipe up spills when they occur. Wash with warm, soapy water to remove items dried onto surfaces.

Ice Storage Bin
The bin should be occasionally sanitized, usually after cleaning the ice machine and when the bin is empty.  Use a clean cloth and wipe the interior with solution. Allow to air dry.

Ice Scoop
Wash the scoop regularly, like any other food container.

Condenser
The condenser is located behind the service access panel and toe kick, and dust should be removed from the metal fins by vacuum. Machines located in high-traffic areas may require more frequent cleaning.

Ice Making System
Hard water scale builds up on the ice machine surfaces reducing production capacity, increasing noise and wear on the components. On Nugget machines, scale build-up on the evaporator can cause strain on the gearbox and motor. Regular cleaning of the Nugget ice machine can help prevent costly repairs.
